Use the weather to your advantage and incorporate lots of fun accessories such as scarves, mittens, hats, leggings, tights, boots, etc… Keep everyone warm while looking stylish. It’s also a great way to get those layers and texture in your outfits and create one of a kind images. When choosing your cooler weather outfits, think warmth, but also slimmer fitting. A heavy coat may keep you plenty warm, but then we can’t see you 🙁 So in this case layers work best. Keep an eye on the weather as your session is approaching and have a few extra accessories and layers prepared in case you wake up and the temperature is cooler than expected. Dress for the weather
: It would be wonderful to have nothing but lovely warm summery days to do your session…but, the weather seems to have its own agenda. If the weather is really bad, like lots of rain or a blizzard…we will just reschedule. However, we can still capture lovely images in cooler temperatures. The best tip I can give for cool weather is dress for the weather! Especially when we are working with little ones…cold babies = grumpy babies = equal not so great photos 🙁

A Perfect Fit! You will want to choose outfits that fit nicely and make you feel great! It should be neither too tight nor too loose. The clothes should hang on the bodies well, without folding or creasing. And always dress for full-length shots, which means socks and shoes that also match and are in good shape. Many times barefoot can be an artistic touch, weather permitting. Also, accentuate what makes you confident about your looks, and play down what you feel self conscious about. For example, I am really self conscious about my upper arms, so when I know I’m gonna have my photos taken, I choose something that camouflages my arms. I have lots of sleeveless outfits that I love, but since I don’t love my upper arms, I opt for an outfit that I know will make me feel confident.

Add LAYERS and TEXTURE. Adding textures will give your photos some extra punch. Think ruffles, lace, knits, eyelet fabric, corduroy, denim, maybe even a touch of fur 🙂 Texture can be found in scarves (light weight or winter weight), hats, jackets, blazers, camisoles, sweaters, shoes and maybe even a tutu, pettiskirt or tie. This list could go on and on 🙂 Layers can be long sleeves under short sleeves, leggings under skirts/dresses, etc… Fun shoes like tall boots or sassy heels. Maternity & Newborn: For maternity, we suggest some simple basics: jeans with a real waist, tight tops that hug the belly, a beautiful dress or flowing skirt and a flattering, comfortable, yet attractive, bra/cropped top/sweater, possibly with a beautiful print. Remember to accessorize! Jewelry, boot cuffs, scarves all add a special touch to your outfit, and belts help to accentuate the baby bump 🙂 After all, most of this session will be all about the belly. For your precious newborn, au naturale, or just a diaper, is best. We want to capture those beautiful bellies, tiny toes and tooshies. If you have a special outfit be sure to have that ready to go as well. Check out my Pinterest board for more Maternity Outfit Ideas

Think personality. Show your personality! If red is your favorite color, wear red. Simple patterns and bold colors look great on in person AND in photos. These funky elements can really give your photos some flair if added as an accent to your outfit. Choosing a bold color that is similar to your eye color is a fun choice too. Cheerful, fun prints, polka dots, stripes, camo; whatever showcases who you really are. Here is a great example of a fun & funky pattern that using the other outfits to accent the pattern.

Need help trying to decide what to wear for your photo session? Below are some great tips that will help you to look your best 🙂
Lets start with some big no-no’s:
Avoid logos, cheesy sayings, and character-wear, as well as overly matchy-matchy outfits, overwhelming bold, clashing patterns. While some of these things can add an interesting touch to your pictures, like an interesting pattern, they can also ruin what would have been a great picture. So feel free to incorporate that funky pattern, but try make that one piece the focal point of the wardrobe choices and use the other outfit choices as an accent.

Coordinating but not matching. No need to over match. The whole group does not have to wear black t’s and denim. Why not shake it up a bit and show some of who each person is as an individual within the whole? Make sure everyone dresses at the same level of formality; either all dressy or all casual, in similar or complimentary color tones. Examples could be earth tones, jewel tones, sky blue and chocolate brown, etc.
